A healthy trend in the stock market is one where the clear majority of shares are joining in with that trend. When an index like the FTSE 100 is rising, the bulk of shares within the index ought to be rising too. And when the index is going down, most of its members should be doing the same. This idea is called 'breadth' and it's an important way of assessing how solid a trend is.
