SRT's lull before the storm

Following a quiet start to the year, SRT expects a busy second half
October 15, 2013

Software Radio Technology (SRT) sold £3.2m of vessel identification devices during the first half, down 8 per cent on last year, and losses doubled to £400,000. But a larger than normal second-half bias was flagged months ago, and non-executive director Andrew Lapping is betting a tide of business will wash up in the next six months. He's just stuck 50,000 shares in his self-invested personal pension (Sipp) at 29.5p.

Russia always places orders in December, and several thousand vessels in the EU fisheries still need trackers by May 2015. More crucially, it's thought that rule changes in the US could be published before Christmas, giving 40,000 American boat owners seven months to fit an automatic identification system (AIS). SRT owns the market and makes about $1,300 (£814) from each one. "Several" new mandates in Asia and South America could chip in, too.
