Certainly, there are reasons for optimism here. Business confidence has risen; low interest rates should encourage investment in real rather than financial assets; companies have built up cash and reduced debt; and six years of low spending should have built up considerable replacement demand for equipment.
Official figures seem to support the optimistic view. They show that the volume of business investment rose by 11 per cent in the year to the second quarter.
