Fund research company FundCalibre has picked a number of funds run by less well known managers for its its Elite selection.

Last month we highlighted seven fund managers that we consider to be rising stars, and a number of these have since been given a stamp of approval by fund research company FundCalibre. The company has awarded its Elite Rating to funds run by less well known managers, including IC rising star picks Alex Savvides and Thomas Moore.

FundCalibre has an Elite rating on the JOHCM UK Dynamic Fund (GB00BDZRJ101) which Mr Savvides has run since launch in 2008. "Alex is a relatively young manager, who has proved himself to be a talented and determined investor," comment analysts at FundCalibre. "Virtually undiscovered by the broader investment community, the fund benefits from an effective investment process, a strong manager and a stable company environment, which has led to strong and consistent returns."

Thomas Moore runs the Elite Rated Standard Life UK Equity Income Unconstrained Fund (GB00B79X9673) which FundCalibre says has had a consistently excellent track record by investing across market caps for the best income stocks.

"Thomas's approach is very different from many of his peers, with the fund being a concentrated best ideas portfolio, constructed with no regard to the index," comment analysts at FundCalibre. "Thomas's analytical flair is a significant contributor to the success of the fund. This fund offers something a bit different from many in the sector."

Other fund managers that FundCalibre regards as rising stars and who run Elite-rated funds are Hugh Yarrow, manager of Evenlode Income (GB00B42KJH51), Mark Martin, manager of Neptune UK Mid Cap (GB00B909H085) and James Thomson, manager of Rathbone Global Opportunities (GB00B7FQLN12).

Evenlode Income is among the top 10 performing UK Equity Income sector funds over one and five years, and has an attractive yield of 3.61 per cent. FundCalibre describes Mr Yarrow as "a potential heir to Neil Woodford's crown of income investing."

The fund aims to produce excess returns with reduced risk, while targeting reduced volatility by investing in high quality defensive businesses, and FundCalibre expects the fund to outperform in down markets and underperform in a strongly rising market.
