Chart of the day: Centralnic, xyz and new domains

Centralnic, which is the exclusive global wholesaler of the .xyz domain, had been waiting for a moment like this, though it might not have anticipated the implicit endorsement by the internet’s most important company. Following the upward swing in its shares, the company commented that “the growing interest in .xyz was expected as awareness and usage… continues to expand”.

You might well be asking why we need to change our web address. The simple answer is that the internet is running out of dot-com (.com) and other so-called ‘top-level domains’, and cannot keep pace with the exponential growth in the web. In 2012, the thrillingly-named Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) began auctioning off the next generation of domains, some of which have fallen into the hands of Centralnic.

The chart below shows the company bet on the right horse. The .xyz domain is by some stretch the most popular in the generation of new domains, a share which is only likely to accelerate as we all become used to typing abc.xyz into our search bars several times a day.
