Chart: Confidence crumbles

Institutional investors have shifted into selling mode
August 31, 2016

Investor confidence is plummeting, especially in North America and Europe. This is the verdict of the State Street Investor Confidence Index reading for August. The key point of interest in the State Street report is that it is a quantitative analysis of institutional investor buying and selling with more buying of equities leading to a higher score and a score of 100 deemed to be neutral trading conditions with roughly equal buying and selling. Anything below 100 indicates institutional investors are dumping riskier investments.

The decline in buying of risk assets in North American and Europe has been marked over the summer with Asia’s confidence also beginning to fade too, leading to a combined global score of 89.7 for August, down from 98 in July.
