Is gold heading for a fall in the next month? At first glance, that's the only conclusion one can draw from the sale of £17.9m in Centamin (CEY) stock by chairman Josef El-Raghy earlier in February, just a week after the Egypt-based precious metals miner announced a near-sixfold increase in its final dividend to 13.5¢ (10.8p) a share.

Had Mr El-Raghy held on until 2 March, when the shares go ex-dividend, he would have been entitled to a payout of $1.4m. Perhaps the chairman recognises better than most that gold is a volatile beast, or perhaps this order of bonus simply pales in comparison with the chairman's residual company stake which, at 177p a share, is worth £86m.
