Diageo has expressed its disappointment at the Chancellor's decision to increase alcohol duty by "such an extreme amount." From Monday, taxes will rise by 4p on a pint of beer, 14p on a bottle of wine and 55p on a bottle of spirits. Diageo spokesman Benet Slay pointed out that spirits are already taxed at higher rates than beer and wine and considers that "this move exacerbates the unfair taxation gap."

Buy

The budget will hurt Diageo's profitability in the UK but its geographic diversification means it remains a buy at 1017p.
