The stock market is more like a TV talent show than you think. There are thousands of shares out there all dreaming of FTSE success. Some have a glittering career of equity returns ahead of them. Others will be one-hit wonders, who rapidly fade into obscurity. And there are more than a few whose sheer lack of ability will end up denting the wealth of anyone foolhardy enough to believe in them.

To tell these various pretenders apart, you need to develop the mentality of Simon Cowell and those other ruthless panellists who judge the nation's wannabe pop stars on prime-time television every Saturday. Which companies deserve to come back for another audition for your portfolio next week? And which are just no-hopers who need to be sent packing with a sarcastic jibe before they cost you money?
Our Share Champions contest aims to help you become a top judge of which shares have talent. We've selected ten companies' shares to parade in front of you. Every week over the coming next nine weeks, we'll subject them to a test. The IC's legendary columnist Mr Bearbull and a top trader from CMC Markets will be on hand to share their expertise. But the final choice is yours - every week you vote off one company. At the end of the nine weeks, the last share standing is crowned Share Champion.
Not only should this contest help you to become a more successful stock-picker, it could also win you some instant cash. Every reader who casts just one vote during the coming weeks will be entered into a prize draw. The winner will be chosen at random and will receive a cheque for £1,000.
On our new Share Champions microsite, we'll introduce you to ten shares that our writers believe are potential Share Champions. They're a diverse bunch, including a funeral provider, an hotelier and a drugs maker. They encompass the big and mighty - like FTSE 100 members BHP Billiton and BAE Systems - as well as comparative minnows such as Aero Inventory.
Like talent-show contestants, even the best firms occasionally suffer mishaps during the competition. Just as the promising young diva loses her voice on the eve of the grand final, one of our companies could suffer a shock suspension of trading. Alternatively, one could easily succumb to a takeover bid. Just in case, we've a reserve-list of five ready to step in: Persimmon, Domino's Pizza, Halfords, Smith & Nephew and Serco.
