New markets and companies data on IC

We have introduced comprehensive new market data on our website, at http://markets.investorschronicle.co.uk.

The new platform offers several advantages over the previous system. The underlying data is supplied by Reuters, so you now have access to the same data as professional City dealers and analysts.

Coverage has extended beyond UK equities to include bonds, money markets and currencies. The data is now integrated not just with IC articles, but FT news and markets coverage too (some FT articles may be subject to separate registration or subscription requirements).

You can also now save charts and stock screens as well as manage dividends and capital actions more effectively in your portfolio. And you can now add managed funds and exchange-traded funds to your portfolios and watchlists.

Migration

If you had a portfolio set up on the previous system, it should have been transferred to the new system. The same applies to price and news alerts. The new system should recognise your username and password in the same way the old one did.

You may find that your portfolio is no longer identified by name (eg, Dave's portfolio, Self-select Isa account), but by a number. It was not possible to transfer portfolio names owing to the manner in which internet 'cookies' store your identity information; your portfolio is identified only by number so as to protect your personal data.

However, you can easily rename portfolios: once you've located your portfolio, just click on "Edit" and then "Modify portfolio name/currency".

Differences

There are some differences between the previous platform and the new one. The Reuters company data is sorted according to Reuters sector classifications, rather than the ICB ones used by the previous system. It is not possible to add alternative investments to the portfolio tool.

Ongoing development

Our first priority was to switch the system over without disrupting over 8,000 portfolio accounts. Once that is done, we plan to widen the data coverage to include international equities, indices and commodities, and further refine and improve the stock screening tool. As ever, I'd welcome your suggestions and comments.
