Rupert Soames, the new chief executive of Serco (SRP), is putting his money where his mouth is. On his second day in the job, Mr Soames bought 242,000 shares in the security group at just over 354p a share. At less than a tenth of 1 per cent of all the shares in issue, his holding is still minuscule. But the investment - worth just shy of £1m - may be an effort to reassure investors of his commitment.
Chairman Alastair Lyons also joined in the action, purchasing 29,000 shares for just over £100,000. Their backing for the shares should go down well with those institutional shareholders who supported the company in its recent share placing to shore up the balance sheet. The extra capital buys Mr Soames some breathing space while he takes stock of what has been a difficult period for Serco, marred by contract losses in the UK and a troublesome Australian contract.
