A step up in military action following recent Isis-inspired terror attacks has refocused attention on defence stocks and bolstered the recent share price performance of BAE Systems (BA.). Lady Carr, the wife of the defence contractor's chairman, was quick to sense a turnaround in sentiment, and splashed out nearly £200,000 to substantially increase the couple's beneficial holding in the group, just days before the government is to announce its five-year Strategic Defence and Security Review.

Shares in BAE have climbed 14 per cent to 498p in the past two weeks, marked up on the back of an encouraging trading update, together with aggressive responses to the attacks in Paris, and news that the government plans to spend £178bn on strengthening the UK's military and security services. Lady Carr jumped in during this surge to buy 41,978 shares for just under 473p each.
