Trinity Mirror (TNI) has confirmed suspicions that it is considering buying a minority stake in Northern & Shell, publishers of the Daily Express and the Daily Star.

A spokesperson said talks were at an "early stage" with Northern & Shell, just one day after the target's founder Richard Desmond downplayed such speculation.
It is not the first time that the two publishers have been linked. In March 2015, Trinity's talks with Mr Desmond failed to come to fruition, but now, with pressure mounting on the British newspaper industry via calls for harsher laws controlling them, many publishers are looking for potential collaborations.
