On 28 April 2010, four months after joining BP (BP.) and a week after the blowout at Deepwater Horizon, chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg bought a little over £1m worth of shares in the energy giant, which then cost 619p each.

Two months later, with the full devastation in the Gulf of Mexico apparent and BP's dividend suspended, the shares were worth half that amount. Since then, £1m worth of ordinary shares would have paid out £188,000 in quarterly dividends. But at 339p they are still worth just 55 per cent of Mr Svanberg's purchase price.
Given this track record, the BP chairman's recent purchase of a whopping 1m shares for £3.43m may not scream 'contrarian buy signal'. As a result of the oil price fall, BP is facing huge cuts to capital expenditure and massive project write-downs. JPMorgan Cazenove expects adjusted EPS of 39¢ for 2015, against 67¢ last year.
