Executives are often told to lead by example; persuading investors to buy shares is no exception. Perhaps in response to a 12 per cent stock slump in the past two months, Vodafone (VOD) chief Vittorio Colao and finance boss Nick Read shelled out about £558,000 and £390,000 each on shares over the last two days of September. The pair raised their stakes in the business to 10.9m and 2.1m shares respectively.

The purchases followed an announcement detailing the end of nearly four months of talks regarding a potential asset exchange with US cable giant Liberty Global. And they came a few months after the group revealed a slight rise in organic service revenue in the quarter ended June 2015, as robust demand in India, Turkey and other parts of Asia offset continued declines in Italy, Spain and elsewhere in Europe. The group also extended 4G coverage to 75 per cent of Europe and more than tripled its 4G customer base to 24.1m users across 18 markets.
