Shares in sub-prime lender International Personal Finance (IPF) fell to a low of 273p before recovering to 292p following news that legislation in Slovakia will immediately place a cap on interest rates charged on loans. This is expected to have a material impact on the IPF's Slovak operation, and there is a real possibility that this part of the business could be closed.

In the year to June 2015, the Slovak operation generated £43m of revenue and pre-tax profits of £6m. If the loan book is run off, there is also a risk that defaults could increase as customers will not have to worry about the risk of not being allowed to borrow again. At least, shareholders can take some comfort from the fact that chief executive Gerard Ryan recently topped up his stake in the group with the purchase of 100,000 shares at 292p, taking his total to over 540,000 shares.
