A round-up of this week's fund stories
April 27, 2017

The UK offers some of the best equity yields available but these are under increasing threat, so if you haven't already, it might be worth diversifying with some overseas equity income. Deputy personal finance editor Kate Beioley explains how you can get exposure to overseas equity income and the best areas in which to get it. She also sets out a selection of the best overseas equity income funds to help you maintain your income - regardless of problems in the UK.

For overseas growth, meanwhile, you could do worse than turn to Baillie Gifford Japan Trust (BGFD) which continues to deliver strong performance ahead of its benchmark and peers. The trust's manager explains to personal finance writer Emma Agyemang why equities in this region might receive a further boost, how she selects the shares that drive its returns and which ones she thinks offer the best future growth opportunities.

But if you want growth closer to home then check out this week's tip which highlights a fund that has delivered good and consistent returns since its launch. Its manager has achieved this by investing in 'excellent businesses at excellent prices,' following the process of a renowned investor with an even longer track record of success.

Exchange traded funds (ETFs) are generally cheaper than active funds and a number of them have just become even cheaper. Kate Beioley looks at which ETFs have cut their charges and by how much, and highlights some other funds that may be an even more economic option.

In our latest podcast the personal finance team consider how to get high yields from frontier and emerging markets, and the risks and rewards of these areas. They also look at how to asset allocate to beat inflation, and Emma Agyemang considers whether Impax Environmental Markets (IEM) investment trust's good run of performance will be Trumped by the new US president. They are joined by Rachel Winter, investment manager at Killik & Co.

Our podcast is now available across five different distribution channels to allow you to access it in the most convenient way. Find us on Soundcloud, Acast, Audioboom, Stitcher and iTunes.

This week's Portfolio Clinic features a reader who wants to generate an income greater than that from cash with a portfolio of investment trusts. Our experts explain why the highest yielding investments aren't necessarily the most suitable and why he shouldn't exclude funds because of their structure.
