The roll-out of high-speed '4G' broadband technologies is gathering pace, and that's good news for specialist microchip designer Arm (ARM). Revenues slipped quarter on quarter in the first three months of the year, but that reflects the normal trend after the Christmas shopping season; earnings for Arm are typically helped along by the latest smartphone releases. Year on year, the Cambridge-based company still managed to bump up its quarterly operating margin by 130 basis points to 51.7 per cent, boosting EPS by 27 per cent to 7.1p.

The future looks bright, too: analysts anticipate a further uplift in royalty income later this year as the company's latest generation of processors is deployed. The bullish mood hasn't been lost on chairman Stuart Chambers. In late April, he demonstrated his confidence in the company's prospects by spending £240,800 on another 20,000 shares, tripling his holding.
