Management news boosts M&S

The high-street chain's recovery potential has been bolstered by two high-profile management appointments
May 9, 2017

The overhaul of high-street stalwart Marks and Spencer (MKS) moved along over the past week via two high-profile management appointments. The first to be announced was Jill McDonald - currently chief executive of bicycle retailer Halfords (HFD) - who will move over to head up general merchandise, home and beauty for M&S later this year. Ms McDonald will effectively fill the role left by Steve Rowe when he became M&S chief executive last year.

Second, City veteran Archie Norman will take over from Robert Swannell as the group's new chairman. Mr Norman has served in similar roles at companies including Asda, B&Q owner Kingfisher (KGF) and most recently at ITV (ITV), where he grew the business to great applause alongside chief executive Adam Crozier - who, incidentally, has also announced his decision to leave the broadcaster in recent weeks. Mr Norman's reputation for transforming struggling businesses precedes him, although analysts warn that this could mean difficult decisions, including staff cuts and pay freezes.

Mr Norman will join the board in September this year, while Ms McDonald has yet to agree a formal start date, although her tenure is also scheduled to begin in the autumn.
