Supreme value stocks, The Trader, seasonal investing, Sports Direct and press tips

Today's IC daily email update
April 30, 2012

It's May day tomorrow, and for some investors who pay attention to the seasons and the fact that the stock market often does badly between now and October, that's a cue to sell and to stay out of the market 'til Halloween. The reality, of course, is that most of us take no notice of the "Sell in May" rule. One reason is that while the rule often works, it doesn't always. Chris Dillow analyses the statistics and the reasons behind investor reluctance to sell and go away. He also explains why stocking up on defensives over the period isn't a solution either. Our companies editor Simon Thompson, who is always happy to go against the grain when he sees real value on offer, revisits several of his earlier small-cap buy tips. He's in no doubt there is ample scope for further share price gains lurking among these recommendations.

Elsewhere the Trader is convinced the bull market is back on and that the recent correction has run its course with the indices now poised to enjoy further gains, while John Hughman thinks it's difficult not to conclude that the formerly uninvestible Sports Direct has finally rejoined the ranks of the investible. We've also got our regular round-up of weekend press tips.
