What you need to know from the world's biggest gadget show

There are some listed players among the many minnows. Netflix (US:NFLX) - the best performing stock in the S&P 500 index in 2015 - launched its flagship online video-streaming service in 130 new countries during the show.

Volkswagen (Ger:VOW3) introduced the BUDD-e electric minivan (shown below), which can respond to voice commands and even gestures, while General Motors (US:GM) and Toyota (JP:TYO) also showcased clean energy vehicles. See here for our recent feature on low-emission motoring.

And Microsoft (US:MSFT) unveiled a self-driving car that communicates with traffic lights, other vehicles and pedestrians' electronic devices to stay on track. Hefty investments by Google, Apple, Tesla and other US tech titans are clearly piling pressure on conventional automakers to develop both environment-friendly and autonomous vehicles.

The flood of cutting-edge devices is good news for UK chipmakers ARM (ARM) and Imagination Technologies (IMG) as well as Dixons Carphone (DC.), which stocks electronics. For instance, one of Amazon's (US:AMZN) subsidiaries, Annapurna Labs, unveiled a home video, networking and storage solution that uses ARM-designed microchips.
