Alpha: Phil Oakley's shares round-up 23 August

Phil muses on Greene King's surprising takeover news and Persimmon's charm offensive.
August 23, 2019

So far, 2019 has proven to be a relatively easy year for investors to make money. Those who have invested in the shares of good businesses outside the UK have done well, partly aided by the weakness of the pound. The depreciation of sterling has added about 500 basis points to the total returns of a UK investor holding a S&P 500 exchange traded fund (ETF), compared with the performance of just the index itself.

In this week's company analysis I react to the surprising news of CK Asset Holdings making a bid for pub group Greene King (GNK). I also give my take on Persimmon (PSN) and why I think investors are right to be cautious about shares in house builders.
