Market Outlook: Football's coming home

No more need for dreaming
January 23, 2018

Ten of the 20 most valuable football clubs are British; English, in fact, according to data out last night by the Delloitte Football Money League.  Manchester United have pipped Real Madrid to the top spot based on revenue after the end of the 2016/2017 season, generating £581 million.  In third, FC Barcelona, fourth Bayern Munich and fifth, Manchester City.  Leicester City rose from 20th to 14th and Southampton is in for the first time (18th).  To get into the top 20 now requires revenues of €200 million, double what it took in 2010.

Today Bloomberg’s poll of most innovative nations saw the US drop out of the top 10.  Using 7 criteria including research & development spending, high tech public companies, tertiary education and more, top place goes to South Korea with Sweden just behind.  In third place Singapore, ahead of Germany.  Israel is at number 10 and the UK’s silicon roundabout or Fen do not feature.
