With concerns brewing about slowing UK economic growth and a squeeze on household income, perhaps it’s unsurprising to see shares in Secure Trust (STB) taking a turn for the worse over recent months. However, in a sign of faith in the challenger bank’s prospects, chief executive Paul Lynam has bought more than £100,000-worth of shares in the group.

Despite the marked-down share price, Secure Trust is solidly growing its loan book. Real estate finance is its core driver, more than doubling loans written during the first half of the year. Taking a lower risk approach than some of its competitors, the challenger stopped writing new unsecured personal loans and withdrew from the sub-prime motor market at the start of the year. Instead, the proportion of higher-quality motor finance business secured increased by around a third during the first half.
