In the face of weak cargo volumes and flight schedule reductions, John Menzies (MNZS) warned the market earlier this month that full-year earnings wouldn't exceed last year's. The shares fell by as much as a fifth in response.
Just a week afterwards, it was announced that chairman Dermot Smurfit would be stepping down, immediately replaced by aviation services industry veteran Philipp Joeinig. This followed the appointment of Christian Kappelhoff-Wulff (chief executive of activist investor Lakestreet Capital Partners) as a non-executive director in May.
The group is hoping previously announced changes such as a cost rationalisation programme can support a recovery. In a sign of confidence (or perhaps a move to reassure investors), a number of directors and their spouses have purchased an aggregate 39,560 shares worth £148,693. Additionally, Lakestreet Capital (Menzies’ fifth largest shareholder) has acquired a further 60,000 shares worth £227,400, taking its total stake to 6.47 per cent.
