Veteran UK equities manager Nigel Thomas is to retire
May 3, 2018

Nigel Thomas, manager of AXA Framlington UK Select Opportunities (GB00B7FD4C20), is to retire in March 2019 after 40 years in asset management. Smaller companies specialist Chris St John will become lead manager of the fund from 31 December 2018, for which role AXA has had him in mind since 2013.

Mr Thomas has run AXA Framlington UK Select Opportunities since launch in 2002, over which time it has returned 380 per cent, against 237 per cent for the FTSE All-Share index. He is also co-manager of funds including AXA Framlington UK Mid Cap (GB00B64W4Q70) and AXA Framlington UK Growth (GB00B51R1233).

Mr Thomas has outperformed other managers in his peer group composite over one, five, seven and 10 years, according to FE Trustnet, and made an annualised total return of 7.7 per cent over 18.2 years. "Over a long track record, the manager has, period by period, consistently managed to outperform the peer group," commented analysts at FE Trustnet. "Stockpicking has made a contribution to results, which have not been particularly exposed to falling markets."
