UK equity income winners, growth amid uncertainty and good returns with less US

A round-up of this week’s fund stories
August 8, 2019

The market volatility of the past year means that different UK equity income funds are now delivering the best returns. Personal finance writer Zayani Bhatt finds out which fund has risen 25 places in the Sanlam Income Study to take top spot, and explains how this fund has managed to deliver attractive returns and income. She also profiles the regular strong performers that have continued to do well and some of the poorest performing UK equity income funds.

This week’s tip highlights a fund which could be of interest to high risk growth seekers. This fund invests in an area which faces a very uncertain future but in which certain companies could still deliver strong returns. And the fund’s managers have a very strong track record of picking the winners and delivering strong long term growth.

Global equities have enjoyed a decade of strong returns but much of this has been driven by the US, where companies now face a trade war, have high debt levels and could be impacted by slowing growth. So it could be worth investing in a global equity fund with relatively lower US exposure, argues deputy personal finance editor Dave Baxter. He also explains why many global funds have a high US allocation and it is still worth having some exposure to this market. And he sets out his pick of the funds that look well positioned to get the best out of global and US equity growth and income, but are less vulnerable to any downturns in the latter market.

In our latest podcast Dave Baxter explains why investors are piling into bond funds and profiles a type of fund they are particularly keen on. Paul Syms, head of EMEA ETF fixed income product management at Invesco, makes the case for having exposure to this asset class at the moment - despite some risks – and accessing bonds via passive funds.

This week’s portfolio clinic features a reader who wants to supplement his retirement income with his investments. Our experts explain why a high allocation to bonds and cash would mean he is unlikely to meet his income target and suggest some different allocations that could help him meet his goals.
