Next week should bring evidence of a global economic upturn.

Official figures in the US should show that retail sales and industrial production both rose in February. Although the rises will be small – held back by bad weather in the mid-west and power cuts in Texas – they will follow strong increases in January, which means we are on course for a big quarter-on-quarter jump in GDP. Economists expect an annualised expansion of around 4 per cent.

Surveys by the New York and Philadelphia Feds should confirm this. They should report continued growth in manufacturing output, with companies expecting further improvements in the next six months.
