Tesco (TSCO) is planning to make operational changes to its Metro and some of its Express stores, in an overhaul that will lead to the loss of an expected 4,500 jobs.

Management said it was looking to simplify processes and reduce administration across its Metro stores, after discovering almost 70 per cent of customers used them for convenience, rather than for larger weekly shops as was originally intended.

The group has seen its growth rate slow in recent months, announcing in June that trading in the 13 weeks to May 2019 had delivered a rise in like-for-like sales of just 0.8 per cent in the UK and Ireland, compared with 1.8 per cent in the same period last year.
