Kingfisher’s (KGF) recently appointed chief executive Thierry Garnier has kicked off his tenure by ploughing £128,000 into shares in the retailer, after taking the top job in September. Mr Garnier – who’s purchase came on the same day new chief financial officer Bernard Bot bought a further £104,000 of shares – has his work cut out to turn around the group’s fortunes.

DIY retailer B&Q and the French home improvements retailer Castorama have been thorns in the side of Kingfisher in recent years. For the latter, the move to an “everyday low prices” strategy resulted in a 2 per cent like-for-like sales decline during the first half of the year. The transformation programme also caused issues in stock planning, stock management and logistics processes, which hurt stock availability and order fulfilment rates. Meanwhile, a 3.3 per cent decline in like-for-like sales at B&Q was attributed to a weak consumer backdrop in the UK and disruption caused by new range implementation.
