Reducing reliance on the NHS isn’t something that happens overnight, but remains the long-term strategy at hospital operator Spire Healthcare (SPI). At the time of half-year results in September, sales from the group’s single largest customer – the aforementioned health service – accounted for close to a third of total revenues.
Management is aiming to bring this down to a fifth within the next five years, and is doing its best to maintain investor confidence in the meantime. To that end, a recent £264,160 share purchase by non-executive director Simon Rowlands follows news of a profitable disposal. The group recently sold the site of its former hospital at Whalley Range, Manchester to the city council for £4.3m. The proceeds will help pay down debt, although any profit on disposal will be treated as a one-off, and not affect statutory cash profits.
