Investors seem to be gradually losing faith in Purplebricks (PURP) as the hybrid estate agency counts the cost of efforts to rapidly grow its market share. The purchase of almost £250,000-worth of shares by co-founder and chief executive Michael Bruce may do little to boost confidence either, coming just a week after the group reported a doubling in pre-tax losses.

Shares in Purplebricks have fallen by almost two-thirds since this time last year, exacerbated by weaker-than-expected trading during the year to April 2018, which prompted analysts to push back maiden profit targets by two years to 2021. The group also recorded a statutory pre-tax loss of £27.3m during the first half; although revenues jumped by three-quarters, marketing and other expenses nearly doubled. Expanding into the US and Australian home sale and letting markets has also driven up costs.
