At the full-year results it was warm weather that made hot foods such as soups and gravies unappealing, contributing to the 1.6 per cent decline in sales at Premier Foods (PFD). Then, in a first-quarter update, desserts were to blame for the 3.1 per cent fall in sales. It would seem the market isn't convinced the group will deliver growth in the second quarter either, as shares have fallen by more than a fifth over the past 12 months.

But some of the management team appear more confident, and are hoping to encourage a rebound in the share price. Non-executive chairman David Beever bought 200,000 shares, bringing his total holding to 504,881 shares or 0.06 per cent of the issued share capital. Philippa Darby, spouse of chief executive Gavin Darby, also spent close to £150,000 to bring the combined shareholding of Mrs Darby and her husband to 5.59m shares or 0.67 per cent of the company's share capital.
