Roger Devlin was appointed chairman of Persimmon (PSN) in June this year, just as the housebuilder was fending off strong criticism from MPs on the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee over what they claimed to be a grossly excessive bonus scheme.

The long-term incentive plan was introduced in 2012, and previous chairman Nicholas Wrigley resigned after conceding that the scheme should have included a cap on the amount payable. Mr Devlin has considerable experience as an executive and is currently chairman of William Hill (WMH), having previously been chairman of pub operator and brewer Marston’s. Mr Devlin opens his account at Persimmon with the purchase of 12,575 shares at 2,217p each. The share price has moved up since then, following news that the Help to Buy scheme, which was used by around half the buyers purchasing Persimmon houses in 2017, is to be extended for a further two years to March 2023.
