Aviva’s (AV.) stagnant share price may have partly motivated former chief executive Mark Wilson’s recent ousting, but it could present a buying opportunity for others. Head of UK insurance Andy Briggs – one of Mr Wilson’s likely successors – seems to think so, purchasing just over £105,000 shares in the life assurer on 7 November 2018.
Aviva has suffered its fair share of controversy during the past year. In May, it revealed an aggregate £14m goodwill payment to compensate preference shareholders that panic sold their holdings after it mooted cancelling four classes of the shares. The group sparked fury among preference shareholders when it said it was considering cancelling £450m of the high-yielding 'irredeemable' shares at par value – news that wiped roughly 30 per cent off the value of some issues in just one day.
