Berkeley Group (BKG) directors have sold a lot more shares. Following on from the 750,000 sold on 7 September 2017, 70-year-old chairman Tony Pidgley has unloaded another 750,000 at 3,850p each, while chief executive Robert Perrins sold another 500,000 shares at the same price, having sold 500,000 in September, too. This means Mr Pidgley is still sitting on more than 4m shares and Mr Perrins owns over 1m shares directly or indirectly.

Normally, shareholders might be expected to take a dim view, but it’s worth pointing out that both directors received 670,000 shares as part of the 2011 long-term incentive plan that could see both of them awarded as many as 5m shares each. And, as the group generates significant amounts of cash, share buybacks have risen to around 900,000 shares. Further buybacks can be expected when these are believed to be in the best interest of shareholders, and not just when the shares are materially undervalued.
