Justin Ash has only served as the chief executive at hospital operator Spire Healthcare (SPI) since October last year. His appointment followed a torrid year for the company, which suffered at the hands of a stagnant insurance market and a drop in the number of NHS referrals it received. Of those patients outsourced to the private healthcare system, new public tariffs still constrained the increase in revenue per patient.

But as recent results demonstrated, the long-term trends for the group remain largely positive. Mr Ash also appears to believe so, having bought an additional 46,500 shares last week. As the population ages, and inefficiencies continue to plague the NHS, a new, personally invested management team could be just what is needed to spark a turnaround at Spire.
