BAE’s £20bn Oz collaboration

Much excitement in defence circles, after BAE Systems (BA.) revealed that it had been chosen as the prime contractor to design and build nine new frigates for the Royal Australian Navy. BAE expects the Australian industry content for the project will be 65-70 per cent, with the ships built at ASC Shipbuilding's Osbourne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide, but based on anti-submarine frigates that BAE is currently building for the Royal Navy. The BAE designs were chosen above those of Italian and Spanish rivals, providing a shot-in-the-arm for Brexit Britain, and were described by Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull as “the most advanced anti-submarine warships in the world”.
