It’s the end of an era: media tycoon Paul Dacre has sold his remaining 33,000 ordinary shares in Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), earning himself £244,200 in the process. This sale came ahead of his 70th birthday and his departure as editor of the Daily Mail in November, after what will be 26 years of service. Although Mr Dacre remains heavily involved in the company (he will become chairman and editor-in-chief of DMGT-owned Associated Newspapers and retains his long-term incentive plan shares) this disposal marks the conclusion of a controversial period for the group.
Change is on the horizon in more ways than one. Mr Dacre’s successor will be current Mail on Sunday editor Geordie Greig, a staunch ‘remainer’ who has clashed with Brexiteer Mr Dacre on a number of occasions. His appointment has ignited speculation that the Daily Mail will be taken in a new direction from November. Meanwhile, chief executive Paul Zwillenberg continues to shift the company’s focus towards internet businesses such as Mail Online in light of challenging market conditions for print media – circulation revenues fell 6 per cent in the six months to March 2018, while sales from print advertising dropped 3 per cent.
