As stock market data becomes more abundant, accessible and more easy to analyse, 'quant' investment strategies seem to become ever more numerous and popular. However, merciless back testing of market data can risk causing confusion rather than providing insight. When investors go looking for common factors to explain the outperformance of shares, it is all too easy to discover commonalities that are coincidence rather than cause. Conclusions from back tests that are complex and have convoluted logic should be viewed with particular suspicion, especially since as the field of 'quant' investing gets more crowded and popular one should expect an ever-rising risk that 'data-miners' in search of an original idea will torture out spurious insights.
