The appointment of Susan Kilsby as chairman in April might have served as a potential a clue for what was to come for speciality pharma group Shire (SHP). Ms Kilsby is a mergers expert. More specifically, she's an expert in defending against unwanted takeover bids - a problem Shire has had for many years.

Only weeks after taking up the job, Ms Kilsby found herself negotiating one of the biggest pharma deals this year, after US firm AbbVie (US:ABBV) announced its intention to buy Shire. But the takeover collapsed following changes to the US tax system.
In the wake of the failed deal, Ms Kilsby has demonstrated her confidence in Shire's future by snapping up 2,500 American Depository Shares (ADSs) for $194 (£120.50) apiece. She was joined by chief executive Flemming Ornskov, who bought 15,500 shares for £40.42 each.
