Neil Berkett, an independent non-executive director of Sage (SGE), has forked out £106,236 for another 20,000 shares in the accounting and payroll software specialist. The deal could be interpreted as a sizable vote of confidence in the group's strategic shift towards products that cater to the increased usage of online platforms.

Sage's new chief executive, Stephen Kelly, has been tasked with transitioning the business in response to the rapid change in the way the public banks and shops. (And that's saying nothing of management's attempts to centralise the disparate strands of the business). The bottom line is that even market leaderssuch as Sage need to evolve to cater for a fast-changing marketplace - or get overtaken by smaller, nimbler start-ups. Of course, the Tyneside-based group enjoys scale benefits and can still rely on remits from its traditional business base. As Mr Kelly says "despite the dramatic shift online, many businesses still rely on physical buildings and costs."
