Oxford BioMedica (OBM), the gene and cell therapy biotechnology company, recently announced its intention to raise £8.1m. A trading statement released simultaneously indicated that operating losses racked up last year as cash dwindled and debt rose.

But the latest financial news hasn't put directors off, seven of whom announced their intentions to buy into the placing. Vulpes Life Sciences, a fund founded by non-executive director Martin Diggle, will also contribute £1.5m, upping its 17 per cent stake in the group. Newly recruited chairman Lorenzo Tallarigo will also spend a third of his fees on buying shares in the group each month.
Oxford BioMedica has been around for some time, listing in 1996, and it appears to be on the cusp of some new clinical trials, with the money from the fundraising expected to be put towards first-stage trials for its Parkinson's disease and corneal graft treatments.
