Phone and broadband supplier TalkTalk is preparing to slug it out with rivals BSkyB, BT and Virgin Media after unveiling ambitious plans to win 140,000-180,000 new subscribers this year.
It added 42,000 broadband customers in the three months to the end of March - its first results since splitting from Carphone Warehouse in March – and now has 4.2m in total.
TalkTalk's current package includes a 24Mb internet connection and free evening and weekend calls for a fixed £6.99 a month. Rival packages include faster connection speeds and premium TV but TalkTalk says its customers typically use Freeview for TV so it plans to woo new subscribers with its low-cost deal.
Chairman Charles Dunstone hopes new subscriber growth and increasing average revenue per user will help drive overall revenues for the company 6-8 per cent higher in the year to March 2011.
