Strong trading in North America and fast-growth markets sent organic revenue at catering giant Compass Group (CPG) up 4 per cent in the third quarter.

There was also a 20 basis point rise in the operating profit margin, which followed a 15 basis point increase in the first half of the year, helped by cost-cutting and an ongoing efficiency programme. Economic conditions in Europe and Japan remained tough, leading to a 3.4 per cent revenue decline in the quarter. But cost-cutting helped offset the impact on profitability, helping the operating margin to rise more than 50 basis points.
