The successful installation and operation of a fuel cell power unit at a telecom tower in Uttar Pradesh has been heralded by the company as the first step in transitioning a power supply network it operates from diesel to the cheaper and more reliable technology.

Intelligent Energy subsidiary Essential Energy last year signed operational framework agreements with an Indian telecoms provider to run the network of 10,000 towers, valued at £50m in annual revenues. The company is targeting a wider market share of Indian telecom towers worth £650m a year.

The company remains bullish on the adoption of the technology despite the fall in oil prices, stating that the hydrogen fuel cells remain more cost efficient than traditional diesel generators used in India.
