SSE loses customers

SSE reveals a disappointing first-quarter performance

Shares in energy provider SSE (SSE) dropped 4 per cent following news of year-on-year falls in the number of customer accounts and electricity consumption during the first quarter.

Electricity and gas customer accounts in the UK and Ireland fell to 8.49m from 8.58m during the same period in 2014. Average household electricity consumption is also estimated to have dropped by 4 per cent to 822 kilowatt hours, while gas consumption fell by 9 per cent.

SSE has continued its capital investment programme, which it expects to total £5.5bn over the four years to March 2018. This includes a new subsea transmission line between Caithness and Moray, which has secured £1.1bn in funding.
