Shares in Metro Bank (MTRO) took a hiding following the leave vote, losing more than a fifth of their value in the days following the announcement of the result. However, much like the rest of the sector, the high street bank's shares have slightly recovered since. This is good news for chairman Vernon Hill, who invested more than half a million pounds in buying close to 30,000 shares just prior to the referendum. Mr Hill now owns around 6 per cent of the company.

However, even without the added uncertainty Brexit has inflicted on the financial services industry, newly listed Metro Bank still has its share of challenges. While total loans increased 125 per cent during the first quarter of the year to £4.1bn, the bank is still struggling to tip into the black. Heavy investment in growing its branch network meant the group still generated an underlying pre-tax loss of £9.6m during the first quarter.
