Tony Lowrie and Alexander Hamilton, non-executive directors of Petra Diamonds (PDL), increased their personal exposure to the Africa-focused miner towards the end of September. A series of trades pushed the latter director's net holding to 152,000 shares, but the most noteworthy deal came from Mr Lowry, who bumped up his stake by 77 per cent through the acquisition of 1.3m shares at 90p apiece.

Petra recently reported a fall-away in reported full-year profits due to faltering diamond prices and an overreliance on "mature, diluted mining areas". As a consequence, the miner's share price clicked into reverse, despite reaffirmation of production targets over the next five years. The good news is that the miner has subsequently targeted workings in more lucrative undiluted kimberlite blocks, which are expected to feed into production - and reduce unit costs - within a few months.
