Just weeks after Howden Joinery (HWDN) rattled markets by outlining costly investment plans to maintain growth prospects, the kitchen specialist's boss dumped 1.25m shares at 492.49p. Chief executive Matthew Ingle pocketed a cool £6.12m from this big transaction, but still holds a 0.62 per cent stake in the company with his remaining 4m shares.

Britain's property renaissance has triggered surging demand for kitchens from Howden's small local builder clients, prompting management to take action. Sales rose 11 per cent in the six months to June, as the group replaced trailer units for its fleet of lorries, announced plans to open new depots in continental Europe and introduced a raft of new kitchen products. With cash flows rising rapidly, management expects to open a further 16 depots in the next six months and reports that UK revenues were up 13 per cent in the first four weeks of the second half.
